Red beetroot has a strong earthy but sweet flavour. The root is incredibly versatile and can be used in everything from salads to cakes to hangover cures. Rich in antioxidants and nitrates beetroot has been celebrated for its health benefits for centuries.
Beetroot has had many uses throughout history outside of cooking including hair dye and the leaves being used as rudimentary bandages. In ancient times beetroot was held as a valuable commodity being declared to be “worth its weight in silver” by The Oracle at Delphi.
Nowadays beetroot is more commonly used in the kitchen and is incredible when roasted and then sliced and served raw with feta cheese and black pepper as a delicious and hearty starter.
